How The Circle Foundation: Empowering the South Side Community Through Authentic Engagement

The phenomenal lyrics of "Circle of Life," the smash 1994 hit from Disney’s "The Lion King," assist with the age-old tale of young Simba growing from a cub to a lion. Circles are a constant reminder of how everything in life is connected. Often referred to as the King of the Jungle, a lion has to fight many battles to climb a successful feat to the top. In many urban neighborhoods, Black and Brown youth face constant battles just to live. Many circles of their lives often involve hidden scars, violence, and a bleak outlook that stretches along the blocks.

Circle Foundation Founders - LaShaun Jackson and Omar Moore

Despite the circumstances, Chicago’s South Side's finest, LaShaun Jackson and Omar Moore, established The Circle Foundation to assist our youth in creating their own circle of greatness.Founded in 2009 by Jackson and Moore, the Circle Foundation emerged from the closure of another organization in Bronzeville, where both men had previously worked. Their shared experiences growing up on the South Side of Chicago provide a unique perspective on the challenges faced by local youth. With over 30 years of combined experience in social services and education, Jackson and Moore are dedicated to addressing the needs of their community with an authentic grassroots approach.

Both founders have a deep understanding of the social issues affecting their neighborhood, and this experience allows them to relate to the young people they serve. While many local and government agencies attempt to assist, Jackson and Moore emphasize the importance of having leaders who resonate with the community. Their commitment to empowering residents to take responsibility for their own lives is central to their mission. The Circle Foundation focuses on providing viable solutions to divert young people from negative influences. While attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Jackson and Moore faced challenges in their freshman year, grappling with identity and purpose. They realized that understanding their roots and staying connected to their community were crucial for personal growth.

This realization sparked their passion for helping others find their sense of identity and purpose. One of the foundation's primary goals is to foster a strong sense of community among its youth. Many students come from backgrounds where familial support is lacking, which can lead to feelings of isolation. By creating genuine relationships with students, the foundation instills a sense of belonging and offers guidance. This in turn is key for building trust and authority, which are essential for success. There are several programs to support its mission. One of its key initiatives is Innovations High School, designed for students who have fallen off track or need a second chance at education.

The Circle Foundations Ghana Trip

Originally located in Bronzeville, the school moved to Fuller Park and eventually downtown to ensure safety and provide students with exposure to new environments and opportunities. In addition to educational programs, the foundation also offers year-round job training initiatives and seasonal job programs. Mentoring programs focus on emotional stability and career readiness, while a full pantry addresses food insecurity—an issue that significantly impacts students' learning and well-being. Both gentlemen realized the importance of introducing healthy food options. Many students are unfamiliar with nutritious foods, often relying on processed options due to limited access and time constraints.

Now, Chicago is one of the largest metropolitan cities in the United States. The narrative that most financially challenged and/or urban youth has not experienced life beyond their block. The founders crushed this ideology with an annual pilgrimage to Ghana. This lifetime journey allows the kids to see the world in a new perspective. Also, there are plenty of activities available learning about genuine historical context, visiting landmarks and interacting with local native communities.

While they are grateful for the continuous support and guidance of the Alternative Schools Network and Youth Connection Charter School, partnerships for operational support with local community members and celebrities have played a significant role in fundraising efforts. Community engagement extends to volunteer opportunities for adults interested in supporting the foundation's work. Structured volunteer programs ensure that community members can make a meaningful impact while adhering to safety protocols.

The Circle Foundation exemplifies the power of grassroots activism in addressing systemic issues faced by youth in Chicago's South Side and beyond. By fostering identity, building relationships, and providing essential resources, Jackson and Moore are paving the way for the next generation’s brighter future. Their commitment to empowering youth reflects a vision of community resilience and self-sufficiency. Now, these new circles are making sure new songs of eminence and vigorous growth for our youth will be sung into the foreseeable future.
